Another Bangalore based band here. I think I may soon be guilty of concentrating too much on Bangalore based bands. I'm not exactly sure of what the genre here is. Their Reverbnation and Facebook pages say Progressive/Experimental. So I'm just going to go with that. I personally think they're prog death with a lot of technicality. Like a fuck lot of it. And this is one of my favourite upcoming bands from Bangalore. In fact, if they tighten their live act a little bit, they'll stop being called "upcoming" very soon. But to be fair, I've only seen them live once, and that was their first live show. And it was Strawberry Fields. Hopefully I'll see them much more often in the future.
The drumming in this band is positively phenomenal. But it turns out the drumming on the recorded EP stuff is all done by programming, so meh. I know nothing about programmed drumming, so meh. The vocals too are absolutely brilliant. It's hard to believe the growling and the clean vocals are done by the same guy. Are they? Please correct me in the comments section if they're not. But I think they are. That's what makes it so crazy.
Anyway, it started off as a solo studio project by Shreyas Skandan, who was joined a little while later by Sachin Rajmohan, and they got together and recorded three songs in the form of an EP. Then they must've decided they really want to play live and stuff so they got a whole bunch of people and formed a proper five-piece. I sincerely hope it doesn't take their sound away though. Sometimes too many cooks can spoil the broth, you know? Anyway, so the current lineup according to Facebook is as follows:

Anyway, so the EP's up for free download in many places, none of which work on the goddamned Law School server, so I've just been listening to it on Reverbnation, where again I can only hear incomplete songs. But, by God that does not matter. EP's got great artwork too. They're like all fascinated with the concept of space, so all artwork is done keeping that in mind. On the left is the EP cover, and on the right's the Reverbnation and Facebook profile picture. So you can pretty much see the space fixation shining through.
Ok EP consists of three songs:
1.) Approaching Infinity:
"The lyrical content around the song is about how we struggled against all odds to make this CD happen. The lyrics describe how time is always moving forward and the only way to get something done is by ‘acting now’ . And the only way to cheat this is by breaking down the Quantum Theory." - Sachin to IRMp3.
The song begins in a very spacey, intergalactic sort of way. Like the mothership just floating in interstellar space, with the camera moving towards and across it. Growling starts a minute and twenty seconds into the song. Vocals are perfect. Just the sort of harshness I want during my regular technical prog death metal listening. What really takes you by surprise is the clean vocals at 2:30. Why it's surprising is because that's also perfect. For some strange reason, just the sort of clean vocals I want during my regular technical prog death metal listenings.
2.) Focus:
"This song is a comparison between the mortal life we lead and SPACE. We take for granted that we are at the epicentre/focus of all that is real , but our existance is insignificant when compared to things happenning out there. We are all part of something so big, that we fail to realize we are nothing but star dust." - Sachin to IRMp3.
Song starts with a couple of seconds of very soulful clean vocals, then obediently slips back to growling, over a pretty djent-type riffing. Djent is sort of new to me, I'm still figuring it out, but this song is definitely the best of the three. Things to look out for are the stretching of the clean vocals, and growling meanwhile in the background, great effects.
3.) Arcturus:
"Shreyas named this song as he had a strange fascination for the star – Arcturus, while composing it. Arcturus corresponds to the Hindu astronomy of Svātī, which happens to be compatible with my star, Karka (or Cancer). The song also goes on to describe the life cycle of stars in general and how our own star is heading towards it’s end." - Sachin to IRMp3.
Starts with a very very djenty intro, and moves into a rather brutal stretch of growling interspersed with some great atmospherical clean vocals. The highlight for me comes in at 1:25, and the double bassing could almost be described as psychedelic. Not in the acid-tripping 70s Pink Floyd type of way, but a more modern double bass, brutality kind of way. I don't know if you're getting it, but that's how I feel, and this is my goddamned blog. This is another awesome song, completely rounding up the sound of the previous two songs.
Who Will Like Them? Fans of djent, fans of lot of technicality in playing, fans of good prog death.
Who Will Not Like Them? People who don't like mixing clean and harsh vocals.
